Books that inspire us!

Our class read My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig and we did some thinking about what bullying is...
Looks Like:

  • The bully Katie bullied Monica without anyone else hearing what she was saying.
  • The illustrations showed us Monica looking very unhappy.
Sounds like:
  • "If you play with them I won't come over to your house tonight"

Feels like: Bullied people feel
  • Emotional
  • Lonely
  • upset
  • sorry
  • guilty
  • broken hearted
This book is good for our learning because...
It tells us not to bully and not to make fun of other peoples names.

I was very impressed by the fact that you had identified the behaviours and made the link between that and why bullies become bullies.

Often bullies have been bullied themselves and they learn those negative behaviours. You would think that because it is unpleasant to be bullied, that you would not like to turn around and do those things to others. But actually it works the opposite way. They turn out like a clone of the bully and practice the same things that were done to them, on other people.

So what can we learn from bullies and bullying?

We have to change our way of thinking. If we value good manners and feeling safe by thinking about what we say and do first, before we act, then we have to say 'NO' to copying bullying behaviours, even if you have been a victim of bullying yourself. Otherwise, you are in danger of becoming the very thing you despise in others. A bully.
